Marty Moylan
Democratic Party leaders in the 55th Illinois Legislative District could formally appoint a new state representative on Tuesday, Dec. 30 to replace longtime House member Marty Moylan who recently resigned.
Moylan’s resignation created a vacancy in the 55th District which must be filled within 30 days of a resignation by committeemen within the district. Because Moylan is a Democrat, the person named must be a Democrat. The likely appointee is Justin Cochran, Moylan’s chief of staff whose name will be on the March 17 Democratic election ballot to determine who will run against a Republican in the November general election. Current 55th District committeeperson, State Senator Laura Murphy (D-28th) has the weighted vote in determining who will be appointed. That means her pick will be chosen as Moylan’s replacement. He will serve until at least until January 2027 following the fall election.
District party leaders are encouraging candidates seeking to be appointed to the 55th spot to apply to fill the vacancy. Those interested should send a resume and cover letter to mainetwndems@gmail.com by 10 p.m. on Sunday Dec. 28, 2025. To be eligible for appointment, a candidate must be a U.S. citizen, at least 21-years-old, and a resident of the 55th District for at least the last two years prior to appointment
The Dec. 30 session will be held at the downtown Des Plaines Public Library beginning at 6 p.m.
The 55 thDistrict includes parts of Des Plaines, Glenview, Morton Grove, Niles, Norwood
Park, Park Ridge, and the 41 st Ward in Chicago. Committeepeople include
Murphy, Maine Township; John Hanley, 41st Ward; Frank Avino, Norwood Park; Barrett
Pedersen, Leyden Township; and Tracy Katz Muhl, Northfield Township. Most of the district lies within the borders of Park Ridge and Des Plaines. Moylan, Murphy and Cochran all reside in Des Plaines.
