With the Illinois General Assembly currently out of session, State Senator Mike Halpin says lawmakers are spending time back in their districts gathering feedback and preparing for the next legislative session, which resumes in January.

“We aren’t scheduled to go back into session until the middle of January, so we’re using this time back in our districts to take input from constituents about bills for the next session and prepare for new laws that will be in place after January 1. We’re also reaching out to community members to see what’s on their agenda and what they’d like us to work on next year.”

Halpin says one bill he sponsored will take effect January 1 and gives local governments additional tools to combat human trafficking across the state.

“It allows local governments to enforce the state training requirements for human trafficking recognition. I’m hopeful that gives municipalities another tool to try to crack down on human trafficking here in Illinois.”

Halpin says input gathered during the legislative break helps shape priorities when lawmakers return to Springfield in January.
