SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WMBD) — Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced on Tuesday that Illinois’ I-Cash program returned a record amount of money in fiscal year 2025.
A record $303.8 million was returned to nearly 312,000 Illinois residents, according to Frerichs. This was more than last year’s total of $301 million.
I-Cash is a consumer protection initiative that works to return unclaimed property being held by the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office to its rightful owners.
“We made common-sense changes to I-CASH to return more money to more folks, and we are proud to set records,” Frerichs said. “But we’re even more proud of helping people. One of my biggest fights was to take on insurance companies to make sure life insurance benefits rightfully end up with the people and organizations they were left to.”
Frerichs celebrated the record-breaking amount while delivering a check for more than $200,000 to the Orphans of the Storm animal shelter in Riverwoods. The shelter was named the beneficiary of a life insurance policy of a Lake County Woman.
“We are deeply grateful for this generous gift and for Treasurer Frerichs’ leadership in making sure it reached us,” said Michelle Shields, Volunteer President of the Board of Directors at Orphans of the Storm.
During his time in office, Frerichs has helped return more than $2.3 billion in missing money to their rightful owners.
He encourages Illinois residents to check the I-Cash website twice a year to see if they have any missing money that can be returned.
