Rockford’s Michele Pankow named first female State Fire Marshall in Illinois history

Rockford’s Michele Pankow will be the first woman in the state of Illinois to serve as the State Fire Marshall.

Gov. JB Pritzker made the announcement Wednesday.

Rockford Fire Chief Pankow with resume her new duties in mid-July pending senate confirmation.

“With 32 years of exemplary service, Chief Pankow’s unique knowledge and skillset have more than earned her this new role as Illinois State Fire Marshal,” Pritzker said in a news release. “Having risen in the ranks since her first day on the job, she understands the needs of Illinois firefighters, and is versed in the public safety functions of our state. I am grateful for her ongoing commitment to Illinois, and look forward to seeing her strengthen our team.”

Pankow, who took on the role of fire chief in 2021 expressed her gratitude and eagerness to serve.

“After more than three decades of service with the Rockford Fire Department, I am proud to continue serving the people of Illinois in this new capacity,” Pankow said. "I look forward to working alongside the dedicated team at the Office of the State Fire Marshal, as well as fire service professionals, state leaders, and community partners to advance public safety, support our first responders, and strengthen fire prevention efforts across the state.”

Pankow started her career in fire service at the Rockford Fire Department in 1992, beginning as a firefighter/paramedic/EMT. Over the years, she was promoted to a training officer, EMS Operations Chief, lieutenant, , captain, district chief and division chief of operations before being named the city’s 11th fire chief and first female fire chief in 2021.

Pankow holds a Bachelor of Science in Fire Service Management from Southern Illinois University, and a Master of Public Administration from Northern Illinois University.
