Legislation that would require schools to test for radon has been assigned to the Illinois General Assembly’s Rules Committee.
The Illinois Senate Education Committee advanced an amended version of Senate Bill 2438 last week. Along with House Bill 3691, the measures would require schools to test for radon by January 1st, 2029.
State Sen. Don DeWitte said the bills provide no money for testing or mitigation.
The bill’s sponsor, State Sen. Laura Ellman, admitted the cost of radon testing for school buildings could be in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Radon levels above 4 picocuries per liter would require mitigation.
