Employees who help people with disabilities in Illinois are concerned about proposed cuts to their services.
Direct support professionals worry cuts would lead to a drop in care and fewer jobs. They say Gov. JB Pritzker’s budget proposal from February would reduce the number of hours the state pays for by more than 900,000, hours spent with people with developmental disabilities.
The state says it’s about efficiency. Organizations and businesses say any reduction would be a cut in care. The governor’s proposal includes a pay increase of 50 cents an hour. Advocates say reducing hours would have a bigger impact.
A spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Human Services says a system is in place to distribute the hours fairly.
