ST. LOUIS – Advocates and faith leaders rallied in east St. Louis today, urging lawmakers to pass the "Clean Slate Act" to help 2.2 million eligible Illinoisans.
The proposed "Clean Slate Act" aims to accelerate the process of record sealing and expungement. This act aims to enable individuals to conveniently access employment, housing and educational opportunities.

Advocates argued that clearing criminal records gives people who have paid their debt to society a chance to move forward and contribute to their communities without the burden of a past criminal conviction.
“What we are proposing with Clean Slate is after they have satisfied the state, after they have passed the waiting period, it becomes automatic that their record is sealed or expunged,” said Pastor Deric Caples, statewide organizer of Live Free Illinois.
If passed, the "Clean Slate Act" could significantly change the lives of many Illinoisans, offering them new opportunities and the ability to contribute more effectively to their communities.
As of right now, only 12 states have approved Clean Slate laws.
