SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (NEXSTAR) — The Taxpayer’s Federation of Illinois released a report showing Illinois has the 7th highest tax burden in the country.
Maurice Shelton joined Capitol Connection to break down the results of the report, and talk about the long standing idea of broadening the sales tax base to cover more services. Illinois has a relatively narrow sales tax base. Proposals to put more services under that umbrella are often presented as a quick way to make more revenue, but Shelton said it would take more time to build out the necessary infrastructure for the tax than the state has for this budget year.
