SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Illinois House Insurance Committee unanimously approved a bill Tuesday to waive copays for sexual assault examinations.

The state’s Sexual Assault Survivor Treatment Act prohibits survivors from being charged for forensic services. Although, House Minority Leader Tony McCombie (R-Savanna) said the Illinois insurance code does not prohibit insurance companies from charging patients a deductible, co-insurance or copay for examination and testing services.

"So, this will make sure that victims are not victimized on any level," McCombie said.

McCombie has eight co-sponsors on the plan, including House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch (D-Hillside).

House Bill 2805 now heads to the House floor for further consideration.
