Belvidere firefighters, who responded to Apollo Theater collapse, honored by Gov. Pritzker

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — Six Belvidere firefighters, who responded when an EF-1 tornado hit the Apollo Theater last March, were honored at a ceremony in Springfield on Tuesday.

The firefighters were recognized at the 31st Annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Medal of Honor Ceremony in Springfield, by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and State Fire Marshal James Rivera.

Lieutenant Travis Tangye, Lieutenant Nicolas Thornton, Firefighter Zachary Bullard, Firefighter James Kriebs, Firefighter Matt Loudenbeck, and Firefighter Greg Pavlatos, of the Belvidere Fire Department, were awarded the Firefighter Excellence "Unit Citation" Award for "an act of service in the line of duty, demonstrating excellence, teamwork, and professionalism in service to Illinois residents."

The firefighters were previously awarded the Medal of Valor from the Belvidere Fire Department.

The roof of the Apollo Theater collapsed as 260 attendees gathered for a performance by the heavy metal band Morbid Angel on March 31st, 2023. A 50-year-old man was killed. Dozens were wounded.

In total, 28 people were taken to local hospitals by paramedics and another 48 people sought treatment on their own.
