Certain Illinois eclipse glasses recalled, IDPH says

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Public Health is urging people to double check their eclipse glasses before it begins after certain brands were recalled for potentially failing to meet safety standards.

IDPH officials said the glasses in question were sold through Amazon as Biniki Solar Eclipse Glasses AAS Approved 2024 – CE & ISO Certified Safe Shades for Direct Sun Viewing (6 Packs). The glasses were also reportedly available at several retailers in Southern Illinois, inclduing:

  • Farm Fresh Market in Breese
  • Highland Tru Buy in Highland
  • Perry County Marketplace in Pinckneyville
  • Sinclair Foods in Jerseyville
  • Steelville Marketplace in Steelville
  • Big John Grocery in Metropolis

The recalled glasses are labeled as “EN ISO 12312-1:2022," officials said. Proper glasses should carry the ISO designation of 12312-2.

People in possession of recalled glasses should not use them to view the eclipse.
