SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Teachers across the state soon may have time to plan lessons built into their school day, thanks to a new bill in the Illinois legislature.
State Senator Meg Loughran Cappel (D-Shorewood) introduced a bill last week to guarantee all public school teachers in Illinois would get 45 continuous minutes daily carved out of their schedule to plan lessons. Teachers can opt to use that time to substitute or attend meetings, trainings or conferences.
“When we prioritize our teachers, we ensure students are given the best educational opportunities,” Loughran Cappel said. “We must continue putting education at the forefront of our priorities.”
The Shorewood senator based the bill on her challenges of needing to plan lessons outside of work.
“During my 15 years in the classroom, I experienced firsthand the struggle many teachers face when trying to find time to plan,” Loughran Cappel said. “Teachers are often forced to plan lessons before or after school. By providing time during the school day, we can ensure better quality plans while avoiding extensive hours outside the classroom for educators.”
The bill is still in the early stages and has yet to be assigned to a committee. If signed into law, the bill would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2025.
