Renters spoke out at the Illinois State Fair, calling on state lawmakers to lift the ban on rent control policies.
A bill in the state capitol would do that. Communities could vote to opt out of the state’s ban on rent control under the proposal. A law prevents people from having a direct say on the issue.
Supporters say getting rid of the ban would help a lot of renters.
The bill would also provide more protections for renters.
