WSIU reports that Attorney General Kwame Raoul has filed a lawsuit against the owner of a Southern Illinois coal mine.
The lawsuit complains that Williamson Energy has failed to comply with good mining practices at the Pond Creek Mine near Johnston City.
Specifically, Williamson Energy is accused of failing to obtain approval for the discharge of chloride pollutants into the Big Muddy River.
Raoul alleges that the mine is in violation of permits issued in 2013 and 2022 and faces civil penalties of $50,000 for each violation.
