UPTOWN AND LAKEVIEW — Despite a late-morning downpour, neighbors, politicians and celebrities marched through the North Side Sunday to celebrate this year’s LGBTQ+ Pride Parade.
Chicago’s 52nd annual Pride Parade featured 150 floats, performance groups, marching bands, walking contingents and decorated vehicles and tens of thousands came out to watch. Twitter went wild after Gov. JB Pritzker downed a Jell-O shot thrown from the crowd and Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias gained some new social media fans after posting a “thirsttrap” photo of his water-drenched look.
Illinois’ First Lady MK Pritzker, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, Mayor Brandon Johnson and several of the city’s new alderpeople marched in the parade, too.
In light of rising attacks against the LGBTQ+ community, days off this weekend were canceled so hundreds of extra police officers could patrol the parade and late-night hours following the parade, interim Supt. Fred Waller said.
