A bill backed by Aurora Democratic State Rep. Barbara Hernandez would allow non-citizen residents to apply for a standard driver’s license instead of a Temporary Visitor Driver’s License of TVDL.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says the difference is that the TVDL contained the words “Not Valid for Identification” in purple which can lead to discrimination as a signal of the individual’s immigration status.

Rep. Hernandez says she backed the bill based on her experience of seeing her father advocate for the original TVDL bill.

The bill has been approved by the Illinois House and Senate and is on its way to governor J.B. Pritzker’s desk.
