Mark Walker (D)
Age: 74
Education: Undergraduate and Master’s Degree from Brown University
Job/professional background: Retired financial industry executive
Elected office currently or previously held, and/or any other service as a volunteer, or in community, education, etc. settings: State Representative, District 53; former Board Member and Treasurer for Journeys The Road Home; former Board Member of the Arlington Heights Park District Foundation
How long have you lived in the district you wish to represent?: Over 35 years
Do you have any conflicts of interest, which could arise from holding this office? If so, how would you address those?: No.
Do you have any financial or business interests within the boundaries of the district you seek to represent, or who may work in the district you seek to represent?: No.
Do you have any criminal convictions (other than a minor traffic violation)?: Please explain the circumstances: Three DUIs from over 25 years ago. I’ve been sober since that time and have done a lot of work in the addiction and substance abuse prevention space to help others.
Who are personal heroes to you, or who has provided significant guidance, insight, or acted as an example for how to live your life? How and why?: President Theodore Roosevelt who fought for protections for workers, the environment, and other popular reforms. President and General Grant for fighting to keep our Union together, and President Eisenhower for spearheading reforms for working people and his courage in World War II. Notably, they’re all Republicans which shows the departure the modern party has taken from traditional conservative values we can respect.
What is something about yourself that might surprise people?: I lived in New York City for many years prior to moving to Illinois and am always on the hunt for a great New York-style bagel.
Why should someone vote for you?: I bring a unique background to the General Assembly from my time as a high-level financial industry executive, business operations specialist, veteran, and community activist. I’ve been one of the leaders in Springfield working on Illinois’ fiscal health and am proud that, over the past four years, we’ve made significant progress. Third-party analysts have recognized we’re halfway to fixing our pensions, we’ve received six credit upgrades, and Illinois’ economy is one of the strongest in the nation. I want to build on that progress to truly fix Illinois’ financial state and make us a state we can all be proud of.
Why are you running for this office?: To continue building on Illinois’ strong economy, world-class workforce, and incredible strengths to leave our state and communities better than when I first ran for office.
What experience do you have, which prepares you to hold this office?: My business experience makes me unique not just in the Democratic Party but in the General Assembly as well which has helped in my work on the budget and finances. As a veteran, I have a strong belief in the importance of public service and defending our basic human rights.
