In light of Gov. JB Pritzker releasing his 2022 Boards and Commissions Appointment Demographics Report—and revealing that Illinois now has the highest number of out LGBTQ+ people serving on state boards and commissions in the state’s history—Equality Illinois released a statement commending the news.
“Prior to [Gov.] Pritzker taking office, the state reported fewer than five out LGBTQ+ board or commission members. In this latest report, we are proud to see [more than] 70 openly LGBTQ+ people serving in these critical leadership roles,” said Equality Illinois CEO Brian C. Johnson.
Communications Director Myles Brady Davis added, “First, such representation ensures that the unique needs and challenges that LGBTQ+ people face will be brought into consideration when decisions are being made. Second, such representation lifts up the leadership of LGBTQ+ people. When LGBTQ+ people are visible leaders in the community, their experiences and stories can be shared, and anti-LGBTQ+ stigma can be confronted and defeated more forcefully.”
Also, women now make up 46% of all people serving on state boards and commissions, up from 38% prior to Pritzker taking office.
