Savings. What a concept.
Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza Thursday urged lawmakers to commit to a rainy day fund, which the previous administration emptied.
“Now, fast forward to when the world was hit by the catastrophic covid-19 pandemic,” Mendoza said. “Our state’s rainy day fund stood at just $60,000. Now, $60,000 is not enough to cover even thirty seconds’ worth of state government operations. Meanwhile, more than half the states in the nations had reserves in 2020 to cover more than 28.5 days of operations.”
Mendoza’s plan calls for automatic deposits – $200 million each to a rainy day fund and a pension fund.
