With a new city budget now in place, Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder is now turning his attention toward the Statehouse and actions he wants Illinois lawmakers to take.

He wants to make sure that lawmakers do not make changes to “qualified immunity” for police officers, saying it’s necessary to keep those provisions in place so that police feel supported. In addition, Langfelder supports a pending proposal that would extend the “pension ramp” for police and fire pensions, reducing the amount the city would have to steer toward those pensions each year and freeing up funds for other needs. Langfelder is also urging lawmakers to release $15 million that has been set aside for development of a downtown campus for the University of Illinois Springfield.

Appearing live on WMAY, the mayor said that project would be a “game-changer” for downtown.
