More than three months after a political rival asked for them, Chicago City Clerk and Illinois secretary of state hopeful Anna Valencia finally has released hundreds of emails sought under the state’s open records law, and they do raise questions about how she appears to mix public, private and family business.
The emails cover 2017 through 2019, a period in which Valencia was assuming her new job as clerk and her husband, Reyahd Kazmi, was stepping up his activity as a lobbyist, working with Monterrey Security and other clients doing business with the city or city agencies, such as the Chicago Park District. In more than 500 of the emails, the name “Reyahd,” “Kazmi” or “Monterrey” appears.
