U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider (D-10th) visited Axley Place, a voucher-based affordable housing development in Glenview, last week with state legislators discussing efforts to increase access to affordable housing at the federal level.

“Housing is the single largest expense for most American families, affecting so many aspects of our lives: the jobs you can get, the schools your children can attend and the kinds of communities you can live in. Affordable housing units like Axley Place in Glenview ensure that families can afford to live in good communities like the 10th District. I will continue to work alongside local organizations like the Illinois Housing Council to champion affordable housing at the federal level,” Schneider said.

Schneider was joined by State Sen. Julie Morrison (D-29th), State Sen. Laura Fine (D-9th), former State Rep. Elaine Nekritz (D-57th), and representatives from the Illinois Housing Council, the Housing Opportunity Development Council, and Community Partners for Affordable Housing touring the 13-unit affordable housing development which opened in 2016 on Milwaukee Avenue.

Schneider said the Build Back Better Act, recently passed in the U.S. House, represents the largest federal investment in affordable housing in history, which, if adopted, would invest $150 billion in provisions for affordable housing, including an expansion of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) which he said would result in the creation of over 800,000 additional affordable homes. The legislation also he said would provide $24 billion for housing vouchers, which would reduce housing instability for 12,800 households in Illinois alone.

Glenview has taken some criticism over its lack of affordable housing over the last few years. The village recently took action to increase the number of units at another affordable housing development for seniors in the village.

“The village held an affordable housing workshop early last year to kick off the discussion on the topic,” Glenview spokesman David Just said in an email to the Journal. “The (village) board took action in December to increase the affordable housing at Thomas Place Senior Center so that 130 of the 144 total units there are affordable units. That was made possible by forgiving a $2.5 million loan and providing an additional $3.5 million in funding. We anticipate holding additional workshops in 2022 to continue the conversation around affordable housing.”
