Sangamon County Democrats want a say in who will fill a vacancy on the Capital Township board, but it’s unclear if the board will listen to their recommendation.
The vacancy was created when Lakeisha Purchase was appointed Ward 5 alderwoman in Springfield. Because she’s a Democrat, another Democrat must be selected to fill the slot. The county party wants to interview and recommend a candidate to township supervisor Joe Aiello and the township board. But Aiello says the decision on a replacement is up to the board.
When asked if the party’s recommendation would be given any extra weight, Aiello said all eligible candidates will be equally considered.
