LGBT Group Denounces Elmhurst Lawmaker

ELMHURST, IL — A group that advocates for the LGBT community is taking Elmhurst’s state representative to task for online comments she made about transgender people four years ago. The criticism follows a Patch story last week about the comments.

Equality Illinois issued a news release Wednesday criticizing state Rep. Deanne Mazzochi, a Republican elected in 2018. She made her 2016 comments when she was chairman of the College of DuPage board.

“Mazzochi’s comments are beyond shameful,” Equality Illinois said in the release. “As a leader of higher education, she was entrusted with the well-being of all students and the cultivation of affirming learning environments. Instead, she sent the exact opposite message: Trans students should be stereotyped and mocked.”

Mazzochi’s campaign couldn’t be immediately reached for comment. She did not respond last week to inquiries about her “Snark of the day” comments.

In a May 19, 2016, “Snark” on Facebook, Mazzochi wrote, “JFK wanted to send a man to the moon. Obama wants to send a man to the girls’ bathroom.”

Three days earlier, she said, “In Obamaland, it is more important to attack women who don’t want to worry about perverts molesting their kids in public bathrooms than it is to attack ISIS.”

Equality Illinois labeled the posts as “transphobia.”

“She called it snark, but we aren’t laughing at her transphobia,” the group said in its release.

Equality Illinois also contended Mazzochi voted against legislation last year that it said would make schools safer and more affirming for LGBT youth.

“Contrary to Mazzochi’s posts, trans people are disproportionately the victims of violence,” the group said.

In other “Snark” posts, Mazzochi said President Barack Obama wanted revenge against “colonialist white men” and explained why a “white, male Republican” would be best for liberty.

She hasn’t written any “Snark” posts since 2016. These days, she focuses on economic issues and the scandal-plagued Michael Madigan, the Democratic House speaker for all but two years since the early 1980s. She tends to avoid the social hot-button issues that were the subject of her 2016 “Snark” posts.

Mazzochi is running against Jennifer Zordani, D-Clarendon Hills, in the 47th District.
