ELMHURST, IL — State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi, a Republican who represents Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills and Western Springs, won’t say who she supports for president. She belongs to a party where polls show President Donald Trump remains popular.
"I don’t disclose who I’m going to vote for," Mazzochi, an Elmhurst resident, said in an interview Friday.
Instead, Mazzochi said she focuses on local and state issues.
"It’s local issues that are making a difference in people’s lives," she said. "When you look at Republicans at the local level, we have consistently delivered good government. DuPage County is the model within the state about how you do things right. Governments in the county are pretty much run by Republicans. They are watching your money. We have been fortunate not to have the public corruption at the local level that you are seeing in Chicago and Springfield."
In the 2018 election, suburbs nationwide were tough ground for Republicans, a situation many political observers blamed on Trump.
But Mazzochi, who was appointed to her position a few months earlier, prevailed with 51.5 percent of the vote for the longtime GOP seat.
Observers say suburban women are a key demographic in the presidential election — a group that is trending for Democrats.
