42 More Die From Coronavirus In Illinois As State’s Progress Has ‘Cooled Off,’ Pritzker Says

CHICAGO — Coronavirus killed 42 people across Illinois during the past day, and the state’s progress against the pandemic has started to stall, Gov. JB Pritzker said Wednesday.

Among the victims were five people in Cook County. At least 8,878 people have died from the disease in Illinois.

The state also reported 2,630 new confirmed cases, bringing the total here to 307,641. The state’s positivity rate rose slightly to 3.5 percent.

As of Tuesday night, 1,679 people were hospitalized with coronavirus in Illinois, including 372 people in the ICU and 165 people on ventilators.

Pritzker, speaking during a Wednesday update on the pandemic, said there had been “promising declines” in positivity rates across most of Illinois — but “that progress has cooled off a bit” this week.

In Chicago, an average of 337 new cases are being reported, an increase from last week. Three people are dying per day, on average, and the city’s positivity rate was at 4.3 percent.

At least 2,979 people have died from coronavirus in Chicago and there have been 82,212 confirmed cases.
