ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – State Rep. Mark Walker, D-Arlington Heights, is calling on residents to consider nominating an older friend or family member for the Senior Illinoisans Hall of Fame, which recognizes the achievements and contributions of individuals age 65 and above.

“We’ve all been inspired by individuals in our life who have gone above and beyond to contribute to our community,” Walker said. “Our state’s Senior Hall of Fame highlights these accomplishments, and I encourage residents to take some time to nominate someone special in their life.”

Applications are handled through the Illinois Department on Aging, which has extended the deadline for accepting nominations this year through Monday, Aug. 31. Those interested in nominating someone can find forms online at …

or they can call the Senior HelpLine at 1-800-252-8966. Award nominations are accepted for the following categories:

The Community Service category is awarded to Illinois senior citizens that have shown support for the general public and community-based programs in their area or at large.

The Education category is awarded to Illinois senior citizens that have shown a dedication to instruction and the world of academia.

The Labor Force category is awarded to Illinois senior citizens that have a record of accomplishment in their employment or professional career.

The Performance/Graphic Arts category is awarded to Illinois senior citizens that have a commitment to health and the promotion of well-being or a record of accomplishment in artistic expression.

Eligibility is based on an individual’s past and present accomplishments, and the candidate must be a current Illinois citizen or a former citizen for most of their life. Posthumous nominees are also considered. Since its creation in 1994, there have been 121 people inducted.

“This award reflects people who have had and continue to have a strong impact on others,” Walker said. “In a year that has been filled with challenges, this is something positive that I encourage folks to check out.”
