A local police chief will be the guest of an area congressman at President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, next week.
11th District Democratic Congressman Bill Foster announced on Monday morning that Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman will be his guest at the speech.
Rep. Foster called Chief Ziman a, "steadfast leader, especially in times of crisis" in the announcement on his social media.
The Naperville congressman said Ziman’s leadership was never more apparent than last February when she led the law enforcement response in the horrific mass shooting at the Henry Pratt plant where five people were killed and several officers were injured.
Congressman Foster also touched on what he says is a need for Congress to enact, "commonsense gun violence legislation" to prevent tragedies like the Aurora mass shooting.
Foster said Chief Ziman, "represents the selflessness of the police officers and first-responders we rely on to keep our community safe."
He said he is proud to host her as his guest.
Chief Ziman said in a statement that she is honored to join Congressman Foster and to represent the men and women of the Aurora Police Department.
Locally, 14th District Democratic Congresswoman Lauren Underwood and 16th District Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger have not yet announced their guests.
