Former St. Sen. Patrick Welch died Tuesday. He was 71. A friend making the announcement says Welch died of complications of a stroke. Welch turned 71 last month.
Welch was a Democrat who served in the Illinois legislature from 1983 to 2005, representing the LaSalle County area. He left the legislature after Republican Gary Dahl defeated him in the 2004 election. Welch went on to do other work for state government in Springfield.
