Mary Agnes “Midge” Langfelder, wife of late Mayor Ossie Langfelder and mother of 13 children including Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder and Sangamon County Recorder Josh Langfelder, died early Monday morning at her Springfield home.
Langfelder, 88, had been battling Alzheimer’s disease since 2016, said one of her daughters, Julia Frevert. All but one of the children, who was traveling, was at the home Sunday, Frevert said.
“A mother’s love impacts us every day and is a guiding light that protects us,” said a statement from the family. “She died surrounded by the love of her children and grandchildren in her home. She was the quiet yet mighty voice for the Langfelder family. We are grateful for the community’s support as we shared our story of caring for her as she battled Alzheimer’s.
“Like everyone who faces adversity, this part of her journey did not define her. Despite this difficulty, she kept her children close to her throughout her care.”
As the children were impacted by their mother’s love throughout their lives, the statement also said, “we are blessed to have experienced this new love of family through her care. Words cannot express our sorrow at this time. She will be deeply missed.”
The Langfelder children, aided by some outside help, had been providing around-the-clock care for their mother at her home. Her husband, late Mayor Ossie Langfelder, died in October 2015 at age 89.
Arrangements at Butler Funeral Home were pending.
