SPRINGFIELD – The state’s checkwriter-in-chief says while there is a long way to go, 2019 has been a pretty good year.

Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza says a pile up unpaid bills totaling almost $7 billion (as of Dec 24) is some achievement.

“Remember, we were not that long ago at $16.7 billion,” Mendoza says. “But we do not have any new additional revenues coming in now that would help us continue to pay down that backlog, so we are still in the position where we are managing a significant backlog”

Mendoza, finishing her third year in office, gives credit to Gov. JB Pritzker, who is finishing his first.
