Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is objecting to proposed federal rule changes that could impact workers whose compensation depends on tips.

Raoul is one of 19 attorneys general objecting to the proposal to end the so-called 80/20 rule. That rule requires that workers who are paid a sub-minimum wage, with the difference coming from tips, must spend at least 80-percent of their time doing work for which they receive tips. Raoul says ending that rule would mean that workers could be assigned much more work for which they don’t get tips… while still being paid as little as $2.83 an hour.

He says the rule change means low-paid workers could wind up taking home even less.
