I was humbled to be in the room with so many friends for the Penny Severns memorial reception. Former Congressman Glenn Poshard spoke eloquently about politics and public service to a room full of passionate people. He reminded me why I will bundle up and gather signatures for those running for office.
However, I wanted to highlight the other people in that room last night, those that I have personally learned from. From Lloyd Holman, the lessons of organization and dedication. From Jay Dunn, I’ve learned how to work in a bipartisan way to achieve sustainable outcomes. From R.C. Smith, what it means to be committed to your community. From Julie Magana, I’ve learned lessons of courage.
These people and so many more are the Democratic Party of Macon County. And while I cannot match the eloquence of Mr. Poshard last night, I can work to prevent his fears of declining civic participation.
Today, I’m challenging you to run for office. If you cannot, attend a local government meeting. Meet the people that represent you, listen to conversations that happen on your behalf. And talk to your neighbors about your commitment to American values and ideals.

Politician shouldn’t be a bad word. We should be public servants – an idea that our representatives at every level do well to remember. And, I want to thank not only the recipients of the Penny Severns Award last night, but also their families. I know the sacrifice that they have made to share their family members with us to serve their communities.
I hope we carry the hard work that they have done forward. That’s why I challenge you to be more active, not just online, but in your precinct. Ask me how if you don’t know how.
