SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A measure supported by state Rep. Camille Y. Lilly, D- Chicago, to provide direct property tax relief to homeowners recently became law in Illinois.
“Too many homeowners in our community and across our state are suffering from the burden of skyrocketing property taxes,” Lilly said. “In order to build a stronger middle class, we must provide direct, concrete property tax relief that helps keep people in their homes and helps build stronger communities.”
Lilly backed Senate Bill 39, recently signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, to establish the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund. The fund would provide property tax rebates to homeowners who claim the general homestead exemption. The rebates would appear as a line item on the property tax bills of homeowners.
“Reducing the burden of property taxes is essential to building a stronger Illinois,” Lilly said. “I appreciate the commitment of my colleagues as well as Gov. Pritzker to making sure that Illinois has fairer taxes for the middle class.”
