State Rep. Steven Reick, R-Woodstock, told police he “had too much to drink” before being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol last week.

Reick was stopped at the intersection of South Grand Avenue East and Eastdale Avenue in Springfield at 11:46 p.m. May 1, according to an Illinois State Police Report obtained through the state’s Freedom of Information Act.

After failing field sobriety tests and a breath test at the scene that was nearly double the legal limit, Reick was booked into the Sangamon County Jail where he posted $3,000 bond. He was also charged with speeding and failure to signal when required.

“I made a stupid and regrettable decision last night and accept full responsibility for my actions,” Reick said in a statement last week. A spokesperson didn’t respond to a follow-up question about whether that meant the Republican lawmaker plans to enter a plea of guilty to the pending criminal charges he faces.

Reick is the second state representative to be charged with DUI in less than two months. State Rep. Kam Buckner was arrested for DUI March 29 when Illinois Secretary of State Police allegedly found him asleep behind the wheel at an intersection just north of the state capitol in the early morning hours of March 29. Buckner failed field sobriety tests and refused to provide a Springfield Police a breath test. He pleaded not guilty in court and in a statement to Illinois News Network that he was “exhausted.”

In Reick’s case, an Illinois State Police trooper clocked a black Ford truck on South Grand near 19th Street in Springfield going 47 mph in a 30-mph zone, according to the police report.

The trooper stopped the truck in a nearby Burger King parking lot. The Ford’s front passenger side tire “drove up onto the concrete curb,” the report said.

The trooper wrote that “Reick stated, ‘I have had too much to drink tonight, I will admit that.’ ”

“Reick stated that he drank a couple of glasses of wine,” according to the report. “I asked Reick where he was coming from and he stated a bar in Springfield. Reick also had bloodshot eyes.”

The trooper also reported that Reick smelled like alcohol.

Asked to get out of his vehicle, “Reick lost his balance when exiting the truck,” the report said.

“Reick stated, ‘I’m not going to say that I haven’t had too much to drink,’ ” according to the report.

After performing poorly on several field sobriety tests, Reick did a breath test that showed he had 0.146 percent breath alcohol concentration. The legal limit for driving in Illinois is 0.08 percent blood alcohol content.

Reick refused to sign any paperwork after being arrested.

At the Sangamon County Jail, Reick did another breath test that showed 0.135 percent breath alcohol concentration.

His next court date is May 30.
