Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to expand background checks on gun sales or transfers, including those of unlicensed gun dealers.
The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 would have exceptions for family gifts, hunting, target shooting and self-defense.
Two Illinois Democratic members of Congress spoke in support of the bill.
The bill’s passage came less than two weeks after five people were killed in the Henry Pratt Co. plant shooting in Aurora.
“Gun violence is happening in communities all over the country – we saw it 11 days ago in Aurora, and we saw it 11 years ago at Northern Illinois University,” U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, said in a statement shortly after the bill passed the House. “I refuse to accept the frequency of these tragedies as routine.”
U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, whose district includes Aurora, said in a Facebook post that he was “proud to vote for common-sense legislation. Enough is enough.”
