A LaSalle County judge Wednesday morning dismissed the lawsuit former St. Rep. Jerry Long (R-Streator) filed against current St. Rep. Lance Yednock (D-Ottawa). Judge Eugene Daugherity found it’s not reasonable to say that Yednock defamed Long in a TV advertisement.

Yednock’s advertisement while Long was still in office described Long as being investigated for sexually harassing a campaign worker. In his complaint, Long said the allegations were of physical and verbal harassment. However, Judge Daugherity found that Long brought up sexual harassment when telling The Times newspaper what the House Republican Organization was investigating him for when it withdrew its support of Long’s reelection campaign.

Yednock’s lawyer argued that the case was filed to retaliate against an opponent for participating in government. He may ask for Long to cover his attorney fees.

Long could appeal the decision. After the ruling Wednesday, his attorney said she didn’t know yet if he would.
