State Sen. Michael E. Hastings, D-Tinley Park, will be hosting a public safety town hall on Feb. 12 regarding the railroad crossing failure at 191st Street in Mokena.

The crossing failure happened on Nov. 9 and nearly caused an accident when one vehicle barely made it across before a Metra train passed through. A Mokena police vehicle was also nearly hit but was able to swerve away before crossing the railroad and captured the incident on dashboard video.

The train was on the Rock Island Metra line, which runs from Joliet through New Lenox, Mokena and Tinley Park to downtown Chicago. It runs through much of the 19th Senate District, which Hastings represents.

Earlier this month, Metra released a report on the incident and explained what happened. It added that it was including new procedures to prevent the problem in the future.

The town hall will include Metra CEO Jim Derwinski, according to a flyer on Hastings’s public Facebook page. Hastings said he invited Derwinski and his staff to give a presentation as to what occurred at the railroad crossing and what they’re doing to prevent it in the future.

The town hall will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Lincoln-Way East High School main auditorium, located at 201 Colorado Ave. in Frankfort. Hastings’s district consists of part of Will County, including parts of Frankfort, Homer Glen, Joliet, Lockport, Mokena, New Lenox, Park Forest and University Park.
