SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) —
Drunk driving the wrong way on Illinois roadways is now a felony.
Governor Bruce Rauner signed a bill into law that makes driving the wrong way an aggravated factor in driving under the influence of alcohol arrests.
This new law now allows for judges to add additional penalties and longer prison terms at the sentencing phase of a trial.
Previously, a judge could not take wrong-way driving into consideration during sentencing.
State records revealed more than 50 people have been killed and nearly 300 have been injured by wrong-way drivers in Illinois since 2005.
