Illinois Trial Lawyers Association Blasts Rauner

The Illinois Trial Lawyers Association is blasting Governor Bruce Rauner’s veto of legislation that would have raised the cap on damage awards for people who are injured while in the care of state facilities.

Lawmakers had wanted to raise the cap from $100,000… where it has sat for decades… up to $2 million, citing the need to take care of the families of veterans who died during the Legionnaire’s Disease outbreak at the Illinois Veterans Home.

Rauner amended the bill to reduce the top amount to $300,000. The lawyers’ group says the veto dishonors the service of the affected veterans and their families.
